The endless repeat, and cross, star and octagon motifs of the
Lotto pattern are thought by some to be related to earlier
Seljuk architectural and carpet patterns as seen in the carpet
above (13th Century
Seljuk Carpet, Turkish & Islamic Art Museum), as well as to
nomadic tribal textiles. Other scholars, including
Christopher Alexander and Jon Thompson suggest that the Lotto
pattern is actually an orthagonal simulation of an earlier
curvilinear design, the original of which has been lost.
The "spiral vine" pattern of later Safavid carpets certainly can
be correlated to the Lotto in form, and the question of
derivation is most intriguing. |
