The
"proto-classical" carpets, with their coherent
orthogonal
geometries and intense colors foreshadow the sophistication and power
of the classical Ushak designs. The group of carpets we know
as "Para-Mamluk" pose an especially fascinating riddle to carpet scholars, who
have passionately debated their geographical, chronological and cultural origins
over the last century.
This "proto-classical" group also includes the "Bellini", "Crivelli", "Tintoretto" and
"Ghirlandaio" patterns, which are named after the Italian
Renaissance painters in whose work these particular designs are
amazingly accurately depicted. |
