In the central medallion of the Ushak (shown above, from one
of our Blue Field Medallion carpets) there are "Rumi" motifs
that are reminiscent of the Lotto arabesques. There are scholars
that argue that the geometric Lotto arabesques were a
degeneration of earlier Seljuk curvilinear designs, which are
actually more accurately depicted in the Medallion carpets. This
progression from the geometric to the curvilinear is termed a
"design revolution" in carpet history and is attributed by some
to influences east of Anatolia. |
