The large
format Ushak carpets, with their geometrical complexity, wide
range of natural color, and immense scale, represent the
culmination of the classical line for many carpet scholars,
collectors and aficianados. They balance both
orthogonal and curvilinear geometry and centralized and endless
field design patterns. Scholars have
termed this these carpets a "design revolution".
Although clearly refined by the Ottoman Turks, the seeds for
this revolution have attributed to Seljuk, Timurud and Safavid
cultural influences. These are palace scale carpets--they define
a space that is both centralized and limitless, placing the
viewer in the middle of an infinite universe, in an earthly
paradise garden. |
